Data: Hilary Term 2016

This series of lunchtime talks was held in Hilary Term 2016 at IT Services, and was aimed at researchers from all disciplines who generate, gather, rearrange, or re-purpose data. The talks dealt with software, services, and techniques to help make the most of data, covering data visualisation tools and projects, and aspects of data management from planning to re-use. The talks were intended to inspire, whilst also considering the practical requirements of research funders and issues surrounding data sharing.

The talks from Michaelmas Term 2015 can be found here.

All talks will take place Friday lunchtimes at IT Services, 7-19 Banbury Road, and all members of the University are welcome. Please follow the links below to sign up for the sessions. When this is is possible, presentations and audio are recorded and made available live and to watch at your leisure via Oxford Replay (see also links for individual sessions below).

This talk will highlight some possible uses of the free / open source 3D rendering and modelling tool Blender in data visualisation scenarios. We will look at publicly available data sets and some work of the current innovation project running within IT Services relating to 3D data visualisation.

Creating Interactive Data Visualisations with Tableau Public

Martin Hadley, IT Services

4th week, Friday 12th February, 12:30-13:30

This talk will introduce Tableau Public – an easy to use, free and powerful tool for creating interactive dashboards and data visualisations that can be shared publically and embedded in your personal site. All the steps necessary to prepare, visualise and share data through Tableau Public will be covered.

Creating Interactive Data Visualisations with R and Shiny

Martin Hadley, IT Services

6th week, Friday 26th February, 12:30-13:30

R is a tool used by millions of researchers for data analysis and visualisation. Using the free Shiny package, these analyses and visualisations can be published as interactive webpages just using R. This talk will provide the necessary steps to start using Shiny and provide advice on how to learn more.
